Achieving Resilience and Beyond (With Antifragility) – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Resilience isn’t just a leadership skill; it’s a survival skill. Despite what I first thought when I heard the phrase, anti-fragility is not being impervious to negative emotions, but rather using adversity as an opportunity to become even better and to make conditions, products, processes, systems, and conditions even better.

Stanley H. Greene, Global Human and Economic Development Leader, was highly recommended in 2020 as a valuable resource on resilience by Dr. Laura Dowling, who you might remember was our expert panelist on toxic positivity a few months ago.

Since then, I have attended Stanley’s Wednesday PowerThinking calls and highly recommend them, so I was thrilled to welcome him as the panelist for our discussion on achieving resilience and beyond (with antifragility). Go to our LinkedIn community for conscious leaders, C3, to watch the full replay of our event so you can learn more about the significant scientific findings Stanley shared on resilience and its applications to conscious leadership.

We discussed:

  • What it looks like to be a leader with resilience.
  • What are the risks when resilience is lacking?
  • What is at the core of how people get through hard times?
  • How can one escape the condition of learned helplessness and build resilience?
  • The 7 common-sense inner strengths that resilient people have (and that we all have to a certain degree) that can help us prevent learned helplessness and bounce back from adversity faster.
  • How you can take that first next step toward resilience, especially if resilience seems unattainable in the moment.
  • How building resilience works (in your brain).
  • How a leader keeps toxic positivity in check while continuing to develop the resilience of the team.

Watch the replay by joining C3 today. Inside of C3, you can comment and ask Stan any questions you have since he’s also a member. Join him for weekly PowerThinking calls. Keep in mind that the more resilient you become today, the better you can lead your teams through the challenges of tomorrow.

I know it’s been many weeks since I have shared pure value-add content, or so it may seem. ConCon is fast approaching, and the bulk of my time has been making sure that the speakers, the content, and the experience altogether, are transformative.

I hope you’ll understand that by promoting ConCon, I am promoting value. Register today. Every day, we are making updates to the agenda to give you the best speaker, session, panel, and keynote information.

I have a backlog of great topics and I will get back to these articles soon. For now, the single most important thing I feel I can do to advance corporate consciousness is to continue to level up the value of ConCon, and to get people there who will take the content and the contacts they make there, and use it out in the world. So, if you are available on November 5th and/or 6th, or if you can allocate time within the 8 weeks after it to watch the replays, then register now.  If you can’t, then please share it with leaders and aspiring leaders you know who are committed to continual growth and development.

Thanks in advance for all you do to raise corporate consciousness for a better world today and a better future for generations to come.

Who Is the Most Conscious Leader You Know?

Who is the most conscious leader you know?

Has there been a leader in your life you wish you could duplicate? Perhaps there’s someone that you wish more people could learn from, be mentored by, be inspired by.

This is your chance to gift them the recognition they deserve while also shining a spotlight on their impact and example for many other leaders.

Does the word conscious throw you off? Let me clarify this a bit.

Conscious leaders are self-aware, empathetic, authentic, and make decisions for the highest good. They are courageous enough to stand alone in being willing to do the right thing, even if it doesn’t benefit them directly. In fact, sometimes the careers of these conscious leaders suffer when they find acting within their values conflicts with an organization’s culture or pursuit of profit.

Sometimes, not only is there little incentive to do the right thing, but there can often be a detriment. It’s critically important that we positively reinforce leaders when they choose to act with integrity for the highest good, and that we make their example more visible to more leaders. At ConCon (the Consciousness Conference), we want to make sure that when one door closes for these conscious leaders, there are plenty of windows for them to shine through so that they can continue to expand their conscious impact, visibility, and evolution.

Take a few minutes to tell us about the most conscious leader in your life, and nominate them for the prestigious first-ever Conscious Leader Award!

Smart Civics, Higher Citizenship – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Observations across diverse populations indicate that while we need to be getting better at having hard conversations about change, we are, unfortunately, getting worse. As a result, change initiatives are stalling and issues are festering, causing turnover and instability that threatens productivity and profits. Even worse, those who feel unheard can end up resorting to more extreme measures.

That is why our discussion during last week’s event on Smart Civics, Higher Citizenship was so important. The two panelists who joined us have both developed programs that move communities and organizations past the barriers that have been stifling progress, innovation, and social and racial justice, among other societal threats.

Doc Cunningham is Founder of See America In Color, Social Commentator, and Civic Advisor. He facilitates civic discussions in communities and brings new vibrancy and dimension to inequities so that the gaps become more obvious, encouraging more people to become a part of the solution.

Michael Taylor is Principal and Co-Founder of SchellingPoint, who brings research and a tech-driven approach to aligning people with a common purpose to take action and move in the desired direction.

Join the C3 community now to access the replay!

Here is just some of what we covered:

  • What are the gaps in conventional change management that produce lackluster progress?
  • What is the central frame of change that has led to a more sustainable impact?
  • In order to create coordination action, what do we first have to determine to inform that action?
  • What must you do before you associate a root cause of issues originating with an executive leader?
  • How do you get a group of thought leaders and experts to yield their ego, agree on a plan, and follow through?
  • How do fundamental disconnects on core beliefs sabotage collaborative change efforts and what can be done about it?
  • What are the three triggers of executive action?
  • How can you shift division about whether change is necessary or not? Furthermore, how can you engage or re-engage leadership in decisions around that change that lead to some degree of change?
  • How and why do we want to turn pain into possibility?
  • What are the breakthroughs in behavioral science that have helped to develop the alignment cycle?
  • What are the 5 things a group needs to commit to or reject before they are aligned in action?
  • How can we reconcile the diverse ways analysis can be interpreted?
  • How can you alleviate some resistance to change?

Chances are if you are reading this, there is some change you would like to see. If you are accountable and the progress, or probable progress, discourages you, I highly recommend reaching out to SchellingPoint. Also, contact Doc about his civics programs that “help society lessen the impact of partisan hang-ups and social flare-ups.”

Are You Ready for ConCon 2021?

If you believe big things can be done (and more importantly, that they can be done by you), we have big news for you! We are bringing together people just like you – conscious corporate leaders and conscious leadership practitioners – on Friday, November 5th and Saturday, November 6th for the Consciousness Conference (ConCon 2021).

I am so honored to be one of your hosts for this event, along with Lawrence Henderson, CEO of BOSS Consulting, Inc.

You see, we have both been out there creating our own ripples of conscious change for corporations, helping them prioritize people and the planet alongside profits, the quintessential triple bottom line. Why? Because it’s proven to stop people from walking out your door and taking your knowledge capital with them. It’s proven to stop the bleeding of profit when that talent walks out the door – the person who knew your model, your operations, your product or service, and more importantly, your customer. You then have to spend money replacing that person with someone new, onboarding that new person, and paying that new person more.

Conscious leadership has also been proven to stop the bleeding of healthcare costs. The mental health of your employees must be your priority if you want to keep your talent and keep them happy and safe. The great resignation is upon us and it’s a reckoning for employers who have been lacking conscious leadership.

Moreover, the problems that we face as companies, as people, and as a planet are not slowing down. These issues are gaining power and momentum. We need to come together to have a chance at victory.

Last year, Lawrence and I decided to put our ripples together and to find others like you, who have also been making ripples so that we can co-create a larger, more powerful conscious change to give us our best chance at moving forward in spite of all the challenges that face us. Each month, we’ve brought conscious leaders together to share their secret sauce for getting the very best results, increasing innovation, and most importantly, scaling conscious change.

ConCon will be our annual concentrated consciousness training co-creation event, where you will level up your conscious leadership alongside other people who feel as strongly as you do that it’s up to us to co-create a better world.

It’s up to us to transform the corporate landscape and make it more people and planet-friendly – and parent-friendly because our kids need us.

Toxic Positivity – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Last week, our Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership event was dedicated to discussing Toxic Positivity. Ever since the height of the pandemic when so many of my clients, colleagues, and friends were expected to be superhuman in unprecedented times, I have been looking forward to covering this topic. In addition, as a coach, I am immersed in many communities of practitioners who range from spiritual to pragmatic and was very bothered by some of the advice practitioners were spewing that bordered on shaming people for being afraid, uncertain, emotional, sad, angry – the full gamut.

Our guest panelist, Dr. Laura Dowling, brought with her the latest data, stressing the critical costs of toxic positivity. We also covered:

  • How does toxic positivity harm individuals? Companies?
  • What does toxic positivity look like? How do we recognize it?
  • Can someone have good intentions and still be guilty of toxic positivity? Is it as simple as this?
  • What will happen to companies that fail to provide psychological safety?
  • With parents integrating work and home, how can they model healthful processing of emotion?
  • How can people in the service, hospitality, and entertainment industries maintain customer experience and their mental health?
  • What are some tools individuals can use to process negative emotions?
  • How can leaders create a culture where negative emotions are allowed to be expressed, yet don’t become morale killers?

Join the C3 community now to access the replay and share your experiences. What has the pandemic taught you about toxic positivity?

Year In Review – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

What a year. What a community!

Last Thursday, we welcomed back 18 C3 community members who stepped up in co-creation with us this past year to discuss various topics related to conscious leadership.

Our panelists filled us in on their year, what themes seemed most emergent, and what they see as areas of focus and growth for the future.

Join C3 and watch the replay to see what our panelists said about:

  • How the last year transformed how we build relationships, community, and corporate culture
  • What change are we keeping and what are we going back to
  • How the corporate landscape transformed, and how “the great resignation” threaten companies that try to go back to the way it was
  • What hasn’t changed, and what change is still left ahead to make
  • How can we leverage the momentum started, the waste we eliminated, and the space we created to tackle this change
  • What Nick Dillon meant when he said the focus that came out of the past year was “believing beyond what’s comfortable”?
  • What new opportunities, possibilities, gifts, blessings, and new purposes were created or emerged in the midst of the crises of 2020
  • How we can get more intersectional
  • How we take our shared experiences and share the responsibility of creating the world we want moving forward

Sharon Clinton said, “We have to continue to carry the torch that all are welcome at the table, and all voices have value.”

That’s what the C3 community was created to do! Make your voice count and join today.

A good group of new topics bubbled up for our future Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership events and ConCon 2021, which will be held virtually Friday, November 5th and Saturday, November 6th. Some of them include Unconscious Bias, Anti-fragility, Trauma Sensitivity, and Measuring Social Impact.

Join C3 and let us know what conscious leadership gaps you would like filled in the next year.

We invited our panelists to help us cover more of these topics and step further into co-creation by hosting additional monthly events. We have at least one new host. Please let us know if you, too, are willing to co-create additional monthly events, and, if you are interested in speaking at ConCon, fill out this application. Share it with speakers you know would add value to our community and invite them to C3.

At ConCon, we will be giving two awards, the Co-Creator Award, which goes to the panelist(s) of the Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership event with the most member votes, and the Conscious Leader Award. Nominate someone for the Conscious Leader Award that you feel walks the Conscious Leadership walk by exemplifying and offering:

  • Authenticity
  • Vulnerability
  • Psychological Safety
  • Awareness
  • Empathy
  • Accountability

Below was the final lineup of guests for our Year In Review. We are so thankful to have these amazing leaders come back to spend more time with us and to have these people in our community.

If you haven’t reached out to get to know these people and explore co-creating with them, I invite you to join the C3 community and do so, and maybe next year when we review, we will learn all about waves of conscious change you co-created.

Using Active Voice vs. Passive Voice – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

When Lindsey Ackerman, Geotechnical Project Manager, came into the C3 community, she introduced us to a change that she made in her communication style that helped level up her conscious leadership. As it turned out, the C3 community proved very curious about this change, using active voice instead of passive voice, and so it became the last topic of our 1st year of these events, and what an event it was. Lawrence and I were joined by Lindsey and Jay Hurt, COO at The Academy of Creative Coaching, who came to serve as our persuasive communications expert and co-panelist.

The usual topics came up, but so did some things we realize we need to spend more time talking about in the next year.

Check out the highlights of our event listed below and be sure to request to join the C3 community so that you can get the replay link.

  • What was the feedback that spurred Lindsey to make this change?
  • Can you be nice and be an effective leader?
  • How quickly did Lindsey realize better results and what were they?

Lindsey was hesitant to present herself as an expert on the topic because this was something she learned about, applied, and realized success. And guess what – this was a perfect example of how powerful sharing your knowledge with our community can be. We learned so much from Jay and Lindsey’s anecdotal experience and Jay’s expertise.

As Lindsey said, we’re all a work in progress, and it’s all just practice. As Lawrence said, it’s all about the reps. Aim for progress, not perfection. Perfection is an illusion. What matters is – Are we showing up? Definitely show up. Here’s how!

Join the C3 community, introduce yourself, and please share with us something you’ve learned that has improved the way you show up.

Then, join us next month to commemorate the end of our conscious community’s 1st year with a year-in-review. What a year it’s been! And, find out what we have planned for the C3 community in the coming year – we have very exciting news!

Adventures ahead!

Highlights of My 15 Years in Business

Today I celebrate the 15th anniversary of the day I officially started Charésumé, LLC (dba Epic Careering.)

I clearly remember the Memorial Day weekend right before my business launched. I fasted and cleaned and organized my office to prepare my mind, my body, and my physical space for a new beginning. That beginning has led to many other beginnings over the past 15 years. It hasn’t all been easy, but it’s been fulfilling and made a difference in many lives.

The #1 highlight has always been my clients. There have been so many amazing clients I have gotten to coach, but also to learn from – how they succeeded, how they overcame challenges, how they influenced change, what they had to endure. Along with my helping them, there have been many professional redemption stories – clients who realized their potential, found a new professional home, and thrived financially and personally because they were nurtured in being their whole selves, inside and outside work hours.

While my clients reached new professional heights, somehow, I managed to keep my business going through two pregnancies, births, 4 years of breastfeeding, and 5 years of either no school for my kids or half-day school.

Other highlights include:
  • Additional publications on Philly.com, ReadersDigest.com, and CPAJournal
  • Working with Tracy Davidson of NBC10 on her Jump Start events, doing LinkedIn training, and being interviewed at the studio for a segment
  • Many radio interviews and podcast features
  • Being Professor Huller, teaching and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders to follow their dreams
  • Drexel University’s recognition as a published faculty member for Laser-Sharp Career Focus: Pinpoint your Purpose and Passion in 30 days
  • Winning a Feedspot top 100 Career Blog award
  • Three years of YEA Philadelphia students who learned how to start a business, some of which still prosper today!
  • Winning 2nd place with my StockJock team at Philly Startup Weekend (Adam, Anas, John, John’s friend)
  • Growing into Corporate training and State (DE) training
  • Founding and co-managing the C3 Community on LinkedIn, engaging the awesome Lawrence Henderson as my partner
My clients have been from:
  • Comcast
  • UPenn
  • IBX
  • GSK
  • QVC
  • TD Bank
  • ICON
  • SAP
  • ADP
  • Oracle
  • GE
  • GM
  • Qlik
  • IBM
  • eBay
  • Honeywell
  • J&J (& subsidiaries)
  • Aramark
  • Quest Diagnostics
I have spoken at/for:

The PA Conference for Women, GVFHRA (local SHRM chapter), Philadelphia Great Careers Group, Jump Start Your Job Search, Black Data Processors Association, ChemPharma, AichE, FENG, TPNG (where I was also co-chair for 2 years.)

I have been mentored by:

Ford Myers, Ed Callahan, Jon Wagner, and Dr. Dawn Francis.

I have developed the following programs/inventions:
  • Jack Shipley helped me gamify the Accelerfate Career Campaign tool
  • Jedi and the team at OpenForge, after a successful crowdfunding campaign with 76 lenders, helped me turn Accelerfate into a mobile game prototype
  • Wharton MBA students who helped develop the prototype for an Online Executive Branding tool
  • The Corporate Consciousness Ripple Blueprint was a 3-year labor of love that took all of my years of learning and experience to curate and develop with various coaches helping me along the way with content, curriculum, format, media, marketing, and enrollment – This is the future of my practice and the very best thing I have created thus far to make a lasting difference in this world
I have invested in studying under …

I would like to thank the talent who have supported me and my mission over the years, my interns and assistants – MaryKate Sullivan, Heidi Jenkins, Angela Mosely, MJ Concetta, and my current virtual assistant, Cynthia Harder, who has been with me for over a year and a half now.

A couple of other people who made these highlights possible are my mother-in-law, who came weekly to watch the kids while I commuted to the city to teach, and my mom also helped watch the girls while I attended conferences and earned certifications. I’d like to give a shout-out to all my kids’ caretakers who made it possible for me to be my best for my clients: Betsy Czarkowski, Elissa Salamy, Emily Vandergeest, Jenna Bednar, and Kait Brennan.

All of these people and experiences have brought me here today, and I absolutely must give major props to my husband, Tim, for supporting me emotionally, financially, and physically. He doesn’t understand the ins and outs of what I do, but he knows I love it, and he knows I’m good at it, and he has total faith in me, and that means everything, especially when I lose faith in myself.

If you are reading this to the very end, thank YOU! I don’t often hear from the people who follow me, but from time to time someone lets me know that what I am putting out into the world weekly is making a difference for them, and just to know that the time and care I put into this weekly effort is reaching other people is enough reinforcement for me to continue to do so.

Thank you all for an amazing 15 years, and here’s to the next 15 years. I look forward to more conscious co-creation.

Energy Leadership – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Though we missed Lawrence Henderson as co-host during this month’s Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership event, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to Phillip Williams for accepting our invitation to be his fill-in. We had a very informative and insightful event, learning so much about Energy Leadership, its applications, its tools, its framework, the related disciplines, as well as how we can apply Energy Leadership in our everyday lives and our coaching practices.

Energy Leadership is a methodology and certification offered by iPEC, and we are in the process of bringing in some iPEC representatives to answer any further questions about their programs after Kimberlie Gridley, our guest panelist and multi-certified coach, consultant, and environmental advocate, sung the praises of the iPEC organization and its programs.

Join C3 to watch the full replay!  You won’t want to miss it.

We discussed:

  • What is energy leadership?
  • What are the 7 levels of energy?
  • Of all the levels, which creates the most resistance to conscious change?
  • What are the 2 types of energy?
  • What are the influencers of energy?
  • What are the disciplines of energy leadership?
  • What applications does energy leadership have to Human Resources?
  • How does energy leadership relate to environmental advocacy?
  • What are some common meeting mistakes that fail to set an engaged and productive energetic tone?
  • What is the distinction between energy leadership and the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) assessment?
  • How is the ELI assessment distinct from the other assessments used in leadership and talent management?
  • How does the ELI help you recognize how much stress is impacting how are you reacting and responding so that you can recover your energy faster?
  • What are the aspects integrated within iPEC’s energy leadership coaching methodology?
  • How does taking stock of what gives you energy help to better utilize the concepts of energy leadership?
  • How does energy self-awareness help you gain and exercise more confidence in your role as a leader?
  • How can it help you have more transformative conversations?
  • How can self-awareness of energy impact hard conversations, including negotiations?
  • What are the five choices that you can make related to leadership dynamics within core energy dynamics?
  • Do trust and energy leadership intersect?
  • After becoming aware of the need for a shift in consciousness in every aspect of your way of life, where do you start?
