7 Blog Posts That Will Catapult Your Career in the New Year

Happy 2022! I know a lot of people have been impacted by COVID during the new year, as we were, and you may not have gotten to start off like a rocket toward your goals as you might have hoped.

Also, the reality is many people, on top of sickness, also deal with financial, housing, even food, insecurity. Side gigs have helped many people stay afloat or finally catch up on some financial goals only to have to give up that extra income, and potentially also lose their main income, when COVID hits them. In the midst of supply chain issues and labor shortages due to mass resignation and absenteeism, some companies have had to make cuts.

Then there are those who found themselves hospitalized who are now wondering how they will pay for their care. Bottom line is, COVID’s impact on people goes well beyond physical illness, and many are struggling financially right now. Many people are unable to hire a career coach to help them get back on track to take advantage of the opportunities left vacant by others or created from sectors that have thrived in spite of or because of the pandemic.

In previous economical downtimes, it was imperative to be competitive, as there were way more people than opportunities. Granted, the prospects are much better today, but that doesn’t change some people’s personal job search hardships. The conventional job search of today still winds up creating a cascade of negative, demoralizing, and discouraging experiences that can leave some wondering what’s wrong with them and why companies can’t just see that they have the potential to be great. It can really mess with your head, and we’re all shouldering a lot right now.

Over the past 9 years, I have written many blog posts with advice that, when applied, will dramatically shift your job seeker experience into one of control and choice – the good kind of choice where you have to choose between one great offer and another very different, but equally intriguing offer. The only dilemma is that you have to decide which opportunity to accept. 2022 Strategy Session Summary – The C3 Community

For our inaugural 2022 Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership event, we had a C3 (Corporate Consciousness Co-op) Live 2022 Strategy Session and had a hoot with Kahoot.  Thank you to everyone who played with us.

My C3 co-manager and ATCCL co-host, Lawrence Henderson, and I want this to be a year of full engagement in the C3 community, and we wanted to be more strategic about delivering opportunities and content that set our members up for optimal co-creation so that we can go further faster together to spread conscious leadership this year and beyond.

During the Kahoot, our live audience shared:

  • Their word or theme for 2022
  • What they have been doing to build mission-based communities
  • Their most-wanted speakers and panelists
  • The top conscious leadership topics that they are working on

We also made the following calls to action on behalf of the community:

  • Join C3 and commit to leveling up your professional development to that of a co-creator of conscious professional development. Perhaps you haven’t joined C3 yet because the overwhelm of surviving the last couple of years left you with nothing left to give, and I completely get that! We can’t give from an empty tank. Consider, however, that the C3 community is also a fill-up station where you can get what you need to give more. I can tell you that throughout 2021, I was much stronger and bolder because I had this community and my co-creators with me. We are better together!
  • Invite other conscious co-creators to the C3 community – Every conscious leader knows at least three other people who share their mission (and frustration). Invite them to join C3 and have them be a part of the movement. It feels so much better to be in action to create a better world and to be at cause instead of being at effect.
  • Share your secret sauce – We know that you have valuable wisdom and conscious leadership successes under your belt that will inspire and enlighten our members. Promote yourself! We are here for that.
  • Celebrate your wins with us – Our members are doing amazing things all the time – speaking on panels, getting certified, publishing books, landing fellowships. The more you accomplish, the more our members know what’s possible. Let us share in your excitement.
  • Jump in – If a topic calls to you or if there is a speaker you have been wanting to hear and connect with, co-host an event in and for the C3 community. It’s a great reason to reach out to people you admire, and it’s yet another way to strengthen your bond with people, expand your co-creation network, and perhaps plant seeds for future opportunities.
  • Help us make ConCon2022 the ultimate conscious leadership level-up experience. Co-create it with us! The time to start planning is already upon us. Be a founding party to what we expect will become the capstone of corporate consciousness and be at the forefront as an accelerator for consciousness worldwide.

Highlights of 2021

During my 15 years of coaching and running a business, I have been blessed to work with so many leaders across industries from startups to Fortune 100 companies. In these last few years, however, I accepted a challenge to align myself only with those who aim to elevate humanity, not just their status or income.

Since committing to this focus, my work has become exponentially more meaningful and fulfilling. Now, when I look back at my year and reflect, I see that as a result of the work that I do, conscious leaders are more influential and better positioned to create conscious change for their organizations and the people around them. This trickles down in awesome ways, and I can see how my work not only makes work better for more people but also makes their lives better.

Here’s a sampling:

  • Because my repeat client since 2015 got yet another promotion at her nearly-carbon neutral Fortune 500 medical technology company, customer complaints are able to be addressed more promptly. Additionally, feedback is delivered to product teams, which leads to higher product efficacy and fewer complaints. In her new role, she will help to centralize quality management systems so that high standards are met globally consistently.
  • Thanks to my stateside partner, I coached a female executive who is now working more collaboratively with her new CEO and the current board to add diversity across the very top levels of leadership.
  • Thanks to my Aussie partner, I worked with a female leader in engineering who mitigates the risk of geotechnical projects. She also served as C3‘s ConCon Conscious Leadership Award Committee Chair and taught the other members of C3 how to get more things done with clear, intentional, direct communication. I also saw another Aussie client continue to expand her empowerment message to girls and women to pursue careers in STEM. She served on at least a dozen panels and has built her following of STEM female future powerhouses!
  • One of my South African clients is an executive who has a team member developing a solution that will eliminate single-use plastics from packaging in 3-5 years. I can’t take any credit for that, but as a leader for his next team, he will trust their expertise and give them the opportunity and resources to solve similar problems impacting our planet. They will love him!
  • My other repeat South African client navigated a few pivotal changes by promoting her brand and being her bold self. This landed her on another team within her Fintech company where she is no longer working on dying legacy products largely ignored by company leaders and customers alike but instead providing blueprints to successful DevOps integration of AWS, the hottest, fastest-growing cloud-based platform. She is now on a team where her experience and outspoken voice are valued. She also avoided recruitment by a notoriously unconscious big bank by making internal inroads instead. They almost had her – it was close. Whew!
  • I welcomed back other repeat clients as well, including one who is now an entrepreneur. I got the chance to support her in launching her luxury travel advisory firm, and my team and I also helped her son launch his new career!
  • Another repeat client, whom I had helped get accepted into the Union League about a decade ago, came back to have me help him evaluate potential changes in his career path. I was able to help a longtime friend do this, as well.
  • Sometimes, especially in times like these, so much changes so quickly that long-term plans get put on hold. I carried over a couple of clients from 2020 into 2021 who I am sure, once they fulfill their short-term obligations, are going to be complete game-changers. One of them is just too good, and she keeps getting engaged for more work. In the meantime, we are able to take time crafting a vision of the future where she makes amazingly valuable and effective breakthroughs in behavioral health that she helped to fund, research, and present in the academic world, and then makes these breakthroughs more visible and accessible to the people who actually need them.
  • A bunch of my students from 2020 landed roles that are in alignment with the goals they had before their world came crashing down. Some of them are now also helping people navigate careers themselves! I’ve successfully duplicated my efforts, which means each of those people will someday have a year like this, and take some credit for their clients’ game-changing career moves that make the world a better place.
  • During the past year, I also turned down working with people who didn’t value my process and whose aim was not aligned with the highest good. By not helping a former Fortune 100 CEO land at a private equity firm, I didn’t contribute to mass layoffs. Yay!

When I get to reflect on a year like this, I realize I have met some truly talented and impactful people through my work.

Additionally, through the C3 community and ConCon, I am helping to bring together changemakers just like myself. And together, we will expand our impact and spread ripples of conscious leadership so that more people can reach their highest potential and leave a legacy that makes the planet a better place.

Through it all this year, I have had Lawrence and Cynthia by my side, and I even added a new crew member, Kristin, to help me make sure all of these amazing people go where they will be happiest and most impactful, even if that means staying put.

Plus, I did all of this from home, for the most part. I didn’t attend any in-person conferences, trainings, or networking events, and yet, my impact reached around the world.

That’s pretty cool. I do hope to return to engaging in in-person events this year, but I also proved that it’s not necessary. As long as I have my health, my mission, my fellow co-creators, and my family, I will keep on keeping on.

Disrupting the Status Quo – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

For the last month of 2021, we finally covered a topic that I have been rooting for since the beginning of the year, Disrupting the Status Quo. It’s actually such a wide topic that we could turn it into a monthly feature and tackle it from various angles and relating to many different industries and, within those industries, individual systems, and further still how those systems interact.

The common focus of our panelists during our discussion of the topic this month was talent. Winner Announced for the Inaugural C3 Conscious Leadership Award

On behalf of the C3 (Corporate Consciousness Co-op) community, Lawrence Henderson and I were pleased to announce and congratulate Dr. Pamela Larde for earning our inaugural Conscious Leadership Award.

On Saturday, November 6th, following a panel discussion on Different Ways to Approach Corporate Transformation, Lawrence and I, also joined by fellow panelist Michael Taylor, CEO of Schelling Point, announced at the Consciousness Conference (ConCon) that the C3 Awards Committee chose Dr. Pamela for “both the quality of impact she has on her community and the number of people that have been positively impacted,” according to ConCon Awards Committee chair, Lindsey Ackerman.

Dr. Pamela Larde, Founder of the Academy of Creative Coaching, with the 1st ever C3 Conscious Leadership Award, presented November 6th, 2021 at ConCon.

Jay Hurt, COO of the Academy of Creative Coaching (ACC) who nominated Dr. Larde said, “Dr. Larde is a leader that empowers everyone around her to be autonomous without the fear of making mistakes. Instead, she fosters working to get better… Dr. Larde is 100% supportive of our goals and works with me each day to help the team develop ways to implement initiatives and achieve goals. Dr. Larde is inspiring in the work she does for women and specifically women of color.”

My fellow C3 and ConCon Co-Founder, Lawrence Henderson, one of 320 diverse graduates of the ACC, also nominated Dr. Larde. In addition to leading the ACC, which she founded in 2013, Henderson notes that Dr. Larde has been “strongly committed to education and research. [She] spent twelve years in student leadership development at the Claremont Colleges and Marquette University, eleven years as a professor of research at Mercer University’s Tift College of Education, and was recently appointed Associate Professor of Leadership for Anderson University’s PhD Leadership Program.

It is evident that Dr. Larde doesn’t only set a high bar for conscious leaders to reach, she has built multiple ladders to help more leaders reach it and has championed a community of leaders who will help ever more professionals up to the high road of heart-led, humanity-first leadership. I can hardly imagine who could follow her as our next C3 Conscious Leadership Award recipient, but I look forward to discovering and promoting more amazing forces of positive change just like her for next year’s award.

Achieving Resilience and Beyond (With Antifragility) – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Resilience isn’t just a leadership skill; it’s a survival skill. Despite what I first thought when I heard the phrase, anti-fragility is not being impervious to negative emotions, but rather using adversity as an opportunity to become even better and to make conditions, products, processes, systems, and conditions even better.

Smart Civics, Higher Citizenship – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

Observations across diverse populations indicate that while we need to be getting better at having hard conversations about change, we are, unfortunately, getting worse. As a result, change initiatives are stalling and issues are festering, causing turnover and instability that threatens productivity and profits. Even worse, those who feel unheard can end up resorting to more extreme measures.

Redefining Leadership

What did you think leadership was when you were growing up?

One of the scariest phases in a parent’s life is when they no longer are the primary influence on their kids. They choose a new “leader” to follow. But are they good ones?

What were you examples were you taught from childhood to emulate, and how did that transform as you asserted your independence? Did you follow the wrong people sometimes? How did that teach you to make better choices and about whom you wanted to be?

I find that few people I meet, work with, and get to know had really strong examples of leadership in their homes and beyond. I’m sure this varies from community to community and from demographic to demographic. I envy, yet fail to relate, to people who grew up in households where they had consistent financial and emotional support. In many ways, it is because I experienced gaps in these areas that I developed certain strengths, yet, I had a very warped idea of what true leadership actually is.

I am grateful to have started therapy young, as a fourth-grader, even though it came with stigma in an already un-empathetic community. It made me realize just how much outside help I needed, and set me on a path of self-discovery and self-help that eventually led to engaging coaches, attending conferences, and taking courses through Landmark Education. These led to breakthroughs in my life, and inspired the desire to help others have breakthroughs in their career that make their lives better.

Growing up, leadership seemed to me to be about power, getting others to follow, and manipulating people to get your way. I was wooed by charisma and confidence instead of character. I made a lot of mistakes in leadership as a result.

The further down the path of personal development I went, the more I realized that I needed to redefine leadership. In one particular course, the Self-Expression Leadership Course, I demonstrated to myself that the leader I wanted to be – the highest version of leader I could achieve – is someone who creates other leaders by inspiring and enabling them to be the best version of themselves.

Of course, idealism and reality do not always coincide, and learning is a bumpy road. So did I still make mistakes? Yes, yet I also increased over time the amount of time I am that highest version of leadership, and my career continued to give me new opportunities to learn, especially from my amazing clients, and to test myself – with professional networking organizations, with parent-teacher organizations, in my community, as a college professor and youth instructor, and with my kids.

Sidebar: the kids are the biggest challenge to date! I seek out more help in this area than any other and continue not getting the results I want, not knowing if I’m doing “right,” and feeling like I am completely out of my element. Anyone else?

I spent the past four years focused on taking everything I have learned and developing the Corporate Consciousness Ripple Blueprint, and though I engaged various coaches and mentors to help me, it still felt like a solo effort and an uphill climb to garner enough enrollment to make a difference, and yet the urgency of making a difference continued to grow as my kids got closer to their teenage years (they’re still tweens) and to impending adulthood.

Then, of course, as 2020 unleashed its fury.

I got the sense that I was not alone, in fact. Other people were also feeling their sense of urgency to make an impact grow, and it was high time we started collaborating and co-creating if we really wanted to get anywhere.

I put some LinkedIn feelers out, and one of the first leaders to respond became my co-creating partner. I’m talking about Lawrence Henderson, my co-manager for the C3 community.

Together we grew our C3 community to 140 co-creators and had 25 of them step up to the online “stage” to share their wisdom and success for the benefit of our community, most of whom joined us last month for our Year-In-Review event.

When creating our vision for the coming year, Lawrence and I knew that we had to keep our mission about leveling up leaders and giving them more and more opportunities to co-create and share the goods with others, so we put the invitation out to our panelists to speak at ConCon 2021 (click here to join the waitlist) and to host their own Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership events. We are so thankful that Phil Williams and TaJuanna Taylor have answered our call to action and now the number of monthly events we have is doubled. This is great news, as we have so many in-demand topics to cover in 2021 and beyond.

Sadly, due to circumstances, Phil cannot jump in just yet, so we are looking for another conscious leader to step into hosting with TaJuanna on Unconscious Bias in August.

Cancel Culture vs Conscious Capitalism

A few weeks ago, I shared a story about a School Board Chair who stepped down from his leadership role in the wake of backlash against his graduation speech.

Some comments reflected a wariness around people being ousted for saying something perceived as offensive, shifting the wrongdoing to the people so easily offended bullying people into resigning positions of power. His wife took to social media to make sure that the record accurately reflected that no one bullied him.

What we know is that there are too few leaders who would so responsively take accountability for harm done. Why? Ego. No one is immune from ego, however, conscious leaders are committed to being self-aware and recognizing when ego is interfering with the highest good. What is in the highest good can often conflict with personal, corporate, or government agendas, which is what makes it so hard to consistently be a conscious leader. As I said in my past article, even conscious leaders make mistakes.

So, when leaders (or individuals) do harm, and fail to hold themselves accountable, it is up to others to hold them accountable. In a company, one might think it is the job of even higher-up leaders to hold others accountable. In reality, performance and success are measured in dollars, which makes profit the priority over people and the planet. In many corporate cultures, people and the planet don’t even show up on the list of priorities, and harm to both is a byproduct. There is no authority delegated to ensure that decisions made by the most wealthy and powerful aren’t adversely impacting people and the planet.

Conscious capitalism arose as a movement because of the influence money has on these leaders and their decisions as a priority of their performance.

There are other ways to influence these leaders to better consider harm to people and the planet in their decisions, such as:

  • Petitions/Protests
  • Media/Social Media/Public Relations Awareness Campaigns
  • Litigation/Class Actions
  • Strikes
  • Government/Industry Regulations

Is the fact that more people are leveraging these methods an indication that there is a mass reckoning or is it getting out of hand?

Is the damage to people (and the planet) getting out of hand, or is the response over-sensationalized?

Are too many leaders’ livelihoods damaged, seemingly permanently, by public backlash? Is it deserved?

It depends on whom you ask.

An accusation, whether true or not, can be enough to jeopardize a livelihood.

Personal grievances can become the justification, then, for revenge. Accusations, therefore, should not be made lightly or without evidence. I am troubled by an increasing trend of people not being able to civilly confront one another and work out potential issues with good old effective interpersonal communication.

On the flip side, the danger of a lack of accountability for harm done leads to more harm done. To assume that unchecked leadership will automatically consider potential primary, secondary, and tertiary impacts in all decisions is in direct denial of history, data, and what we currently understand about human behavior. We are at such a critical point in our climate, both planetary and social, that if the oppression of our people and our planet continue, there will be another kind of reckoning. And it could make profit seem like a very foolish priority.

What about when the harm isn’t yet known to anyone, but a decision is recognized as harmful by the leader who made it? How can we incentivize leaders to admit to their mistakes if the admission itself can be damaging or fatal to a lucrative career? Accountability doesn’t have to be fatal, but sometimes it hurts. Can a leader come clean without carnage?

I’ve noticed that while we are quick to vilify, we also love a redemption story. Still, some will continue to vilify, but a public figure can restore livelihood and reputation by being a “bad guy turned good.”  Yes, this can burn bridges, especially if doing so brings other harm-doers down. It’s evident, though, that what isn’t working needs to be replaced with systems that work better.

At the ConCon event coming up in November 2021, I am compiling a panel of change-makers who have influenced corporate leaders to better prioritize people and the planet and plan on facilitating the co-creation of a list of protocols and best practices from the debate of the panel and input from attendees.
