Improving Access to Resources and Opportunity – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

I’m going to recommend something I haven’t before – even if you attended live, I recommend that you watch the replay of this month’s Answer the Call to Conscious Leadership – Improving Access to Resources and Opportunity. The replay, as usual, is posted in our C3 Community on LinkedIn, so if you’re not there, request membership today.

About 20 minutes into the event, and 15 major insights later, I realized what an opportunity it was to be able to listen with greater presence to what was shared. Some points were just begging to be reinforced with another listen, while other major insights were so surrounded by other major insights that I missed them during the live event.

C3 members and this month’s panelists, Dominique “D” Ross, Personal and Professional Development champion and Sharon Clinton, Deputy Executive Director and change-maker for the City of Philadelphia, shared critical perspectives on how to improve access to resources and opportunity whether you are a leader in charge of assessing and executing greater access for your teams and communities or whether you are an individual with access challenges and obstacles of your own.

I Am A Feminist

I’ve never identified as a feminist. Perhaps that is because I was taught by the men in my life that it was a dirty word.

I might have even learned that being a feminist would damage my reputation and opportunity, assuming the doors to those opportunities had to be opened by a man, which is still largely too true. It could have been because the media of my time portrayed feminists as nerdy, angry, and unlikeable – three things that I aimed not to be. Perhaps it’s because I have often experienced my own gender being unkind, judgmental, and deliberately demeaning. Perhaps it’s because women have ripped off my ideas without giving me credit. Men have, too, but these women are in women’s professional support groups. I have not embraced nor been embraced by these groups.

Why is that?

This week, I attended a Future Works Alliance event led by its founder, Anne Gemmell, called Women, Work and COVID: The Future is Still Female. During that event, the question was asked: Why aren’t women women’s biggest allies in making it to the C-Suite?

Why do we find that more often than not, women are apt to not let other women shine too brightly?

Sharon Clinton, Deputy Executive Director of Culture, Compliance and Organizational Infrastructure in the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity, who led the breakout room discussion on racial and gender bias on the path to C-Suite, asserted that perhaps it’s because women at the top have scars from the battles they fought to get there. Perhaps there is a potential resentment for women who achieve the same without or with fewer scars.

When I likely needed it most, I avoided mom’s clubs. I tried them, and they were exactly as I feared – a bunch of women judging other women.

Since we were young, we have sacrificed each other to save face, tearing each other down hoping it would lift us up. These were the dynamics of female dominance that we learned. We rewarded each other for making fun of each other whether it was through prank calls or whispers. Gossip was like social capital. If you had some, everyone wanted to talk to you. It’s even worse now with social media.

I have to be honest – I don’t think I would have made it out of middle school alive had there been social media! I knew very few nice girls who did not succumb to these twisted power games. These girls usually, smartly, were well-liked by all, but not super close with anyone. It was as if the closer you got to a friend, the more drama ensued. We dealt with our own insecurities by redirecting people’s attention to the flaws of others.

You’d think we’d all grow out of it.

Some of us have. Some of us, honestly, have not.

I gave up vying for popularity in high school and sought out diverse relationships instead; I joined clubs. There was always so much drama among my girl friends (and that didn’t change much even as we aged). Sometimes I felt more comfortable with guy friends – equally loyal, less dramatic.

I’m a sorority girl, and from my impression of women’s groups, you may not get that. I did not intend to pledge a sorority; I was recruited by a friend from high school. Those girls got to know me and, not only accepted me for who I was, mistakes and all, but also appreciated and celebrated my uniqueness. The sorority I chose and that chose me still has an active alumni association. In fact, we will meet virtually this weekend for our annual luncheon. Pledging, for all intents and purposes, was like training in how to be the most sister-like friend you can be. Was there drama? Yes. Did everyone like each other? No. However, groupthink influenced a sense of loyalty and collaboration that superseded personal conflicts. It was actually a GREAT experience in working in harmony with other women, and I wish more women had the same type of experience. From what I discern, not all sorority pledging and sisterhoods accomplish this, but it seems Vice President Kamala Harris has enjoyed such an experience.

My first job in recruiting was in an all-female boutique executive search firm. I hadn’t realized how well women could work together and nurture each other without men around until I had this experience. How I missed those days when I had been psychologically bullied and bad-mouthed by “mean girls.”

When I started my company, most of my clientele were men purely because I was coming from technical recruiting, and technology is dominated by men. My mentors were men. I had a male business coach advise me to put my picture on my website to leverage my (much younger) appearance to attract more of my target audience. (I didn’t – that was never for what I wanted to be valued, especially by clients.) I had known women more experienced than I, but they didn’t really do much for my career. In fact, they usually took more than they gave.

The Harvard Business Review found in 2010 that women are over-mentored yet under-sponsored, and that remains true. Men continue to get promoted more than women. There are also deficiencies in other kinds of sponsorship, such as childcare support.

This is a problem that impacts us all. Data shows huge economic losses linked to racial and gender disparities and lack of sufficient childcare.

Over 2.5 million women lost their jobs during the pandemic. In December 2020, 100% of people who lost their jobs were women, according to data cited by Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) this past Tuesday.

Our current climate of rugged individualism has proven to be not only toxic to overall mental health, but has proven to be devoid of any benefit even to the individual. Shared prosperity has not been shared by all, as the Congresswoman also pointed out on Tuesday. Data shows that even prosperous people would be that much more prosperous if populations who have been left behind were given the opportunity to catch up.

A McKinsey report from August of 2019 explains the economic impacts of closing the racial wealth gap. Their data shows that by closing the gap, the U.S. GDP would rise by 4-6% in 10 years.

A study by the International Monetary Fund also links higher growth to industries and countries with more women in the workforce and greater gender equality.

Keeping all of this in mind, it seems logical to me that enabling more people to prosper by eliminating their obstacles and challenges to doing so is beneficial to everyone. By empowering people with education and training, and ensuring that they have equal access to resources and opportunity, you have fewer people needing financial support from the government and more people contributing to innovation and progress. Growth is accelerated when efforts are focused on the populations with the most challenges and least access.

Growing up, we made ourselves susceptible to feeling as if we deserved the criticism of boy/men. I bought into it. I let the men in my life define me as a woman and I rejected female influence because of how bad it made me feel. Well, I have two daughters now and that ends with me! The gender revolution is far from over. I see now how much my resignation has hindered ALL genders and races. It’s time I stand up for women!

So, I proudly declare: I am a feminist!

Women have not stepped up fully because hurt people hurt people. Women, it’s time we heal ourselves to heal each other. It’s time we fully step into our divine feminine power and be in awe of ourselves and each other. It’s time WE define what being a woman is, intentionally. While we demand respect and recognition from our male counterparts, we need to do this for each other as well. Let’s heal together.

15 Ways to Leverage the C3 Community to Accelerate Consciousness and Your Career

 

In 6 months, Lawrence and I grew the C3: Corporate Consciousness Co-op Community to over 100 people, and we’re still growing.

This group’s vision was to put together leaders who have individually created their own ripples to elevate corporations’ consciousness and recognize that by working together, these ripples become larger, faster, and more powerful waves of transformation.

It’s for those who share a sense of urgency about how quickly we as a planet need to outpace technology, climate change, and greed before we destroy ourselves. 2020 was the largest global challenge we’ve experienced in our lifetime, but there is every reason to believe that other, perhaps greater, challenges lie ahead. We need leaders willing to sacrifice popularity and security for effectiveness in creating change.

The C3 community is not for wish-makers but action-takers. We are in it for the mutual value we are creating. Not only do we get to go further and faster together, but we also get to promote our own initiatives to garner more significant support. We get to support our counterparts’ professional endeavors to help them get further on their journey, as well.

Our goal for 2021 is to expand this group while maintaining quality, which we will measure by engagement. We don’t just want any members who request to join. We want those who are willing to participate and willing to add value.

Once you are in the community, you’ll be invited to engage in a few different ways. We’ll also use these guidelines to assess our engagement and growth success.

Introduce yourself. Reintroduce yourself.

Once your membership is approved, you will be welcomed, tagged, and asked to let the community know what topics and practices related to conscious leadership that you like to speak on. When you do this, your topics are truncated down to 30 characters and are added to our topics poll. This past month we had so many topics we split them into 3 polls and down to a final poll. Topics that have votes (or relevance/timeliness in their favor) are carried over to the next month, but they won’t always, especially as we expand.

If you were an original member, you might have only introduced yourself to a few people, whereas now there are over 100! So hop back on and reintroduce yourself! You may have also thought about other niche topics you want to speak on. Go ahead and share!

We aren’t threatening to delete anyone right now, but because of our engagement goals and our commitment to filling this community with co-creating action-takers, we may eventually do some house cleaning. Don’t just be a passive observer. Stay active and add value!

Read other people’s introductions

None of us have reached complete conscious leadership enlightenment, yet we all have valuable expertise. Someone right here in the community may be an expert in something that you are struggling with right now. As long as we maintain the group’s quality by ensuring that members are all committed to the same thing, co-creation, expect a warm reception to an invitation to exchange expertise. Follow up when you receive such an invitation, as well.

Vote in event topic polls

Vote for yourself or vote for someone else. Just vote! The point of voting is to ensure that our content co-creation is what you desire, even demand, based on what challenges are relevant to you in your conscious leadership journey. On the other hand, say you really want to hear about a topic, but you know you won’t be available on the first Thursday of the month at 1 PM ET, vote for another topic.

Did you refer someone into C3 because you knew that the community would add value to them and vice versa? Vote for them! Remember that a vote for a topic is also a vote for a member.

Spread the word

As I’ve said, we are not interested in growth alone. We do not want to dilute our community with people who are not practicing and promoting conscious leadership. We don’t want people who are more interested in serving their own brand interests than contributing to the movement.

We talk about the tenets of conscious leadership and crowdsource ideas for keynotes and breakouts. If you are on this platform, follow us both and put our next event, March 9th, on your calendar. We’re talking about psychological safety and whatever else seems important to discuss.

Share relevant articles/blogs – even your own – just ask a thoughtful question

The problem with many of the other groups for practitioners I am in is that it becomes a blog dumping ground. Everyone shares their blog, and no one engages. I mean, post after post with no engagement, not even likes!

For this reason, many group managers have prohibited promoting external links at all.

We are pro-promotion, which is rare. And, we get where these group managers are coming from, as well. When you share a post or article, start a discussion or ask a question, be sure to tag people with relevant experience and ask them to share their opinions or experiences.

Invite other members to connect

Connecting obviously makes it easier to co-create. As an OG LinkedIn trainer, I encourage you to add a note and explain your intentions. Mention the C3 community. If we manage this community right, you will find warm receptions to these invitations.

Promote your event

Do you know of other groups or organizations’ conscious leadership events? Let us know! Knowledge-share is yet another critical value of this community.

Attend someone’s event

When you see an event posted, and you have the time available, go. Engage. Let people know what we’re doing here. Bring a few great people back with you, especially insightful speakers. Talk up the C3 member who is hosting or speaking. Share with us a summary of the event. Give those of us who couldn’t attend an overview of what we missed and pieces of value!

Co-create a new event

We don’t have a monopoly on events in C3. If another topic is in demand, and you are an expert in that topic, create a new event. Even better, consider co-creating that event with some of the people who also voted for it. You can host it and invite others to be panelists, or you can ask someone else to host so that you can be a panelist and bring in other panelists – or not. We have found that we have tremendously enjoyable and valuable banter with 4 perspectives contributing, but that’s not a rule.

Give us more ideas

Most other LinkedIn groups that I am in are not very active. On the other hand, many of the Facebook groups I am in are very active, yet the group I created (Raising Corporate Consciousness) had nearly no engagement over several months. If you see other groups doing things to nurture co-creation, engagement, and value, please let us know about it.

If you see a post or event outside the group you feel is worth mimicking, post it yourself. We are not here to hog the spotlight; quite the opposite. We are here to elevate YOU!

Volunteer

With more ideas, we’ll need more volunteers to help support execution. With more volunteers, we can do more events and highlight more of our members. There are already ideas on the table for which we could use man/woman power, for instance – a structured mentor program.

There are gaps in our ability to engage on all platforms to promote the C3 community and our value. We are a part of many other platforms such as Slack, Quora, and Reddit. If you are savvy with any of these platforms, let us know. We can talk about how you can leverage the time you are already spending to add value to the community while also using the community to add value to your career and conscious leadership momentum.

Future Vision:

As of now, there is no monetization for this group. In fact, Lawrence and I engage our assistants’ help to help us manage the administration and promotion of this group, so it’s operating at a cost. This means we do not have a budget to pay for speakers.

However, stay tuned for an announcement about a June telesummit. This will be an event born from the C3 community that illuminates the thought-leadership, expertise, and value of its members.

C3 won’t be the best-kept secret forever, and the odds of having your topic chosen as our monthly topic will go down as membership goes up.

When You Finally See the Dark Side

When you are a confidant to people in bad job situations, you become privy to some pretty dark intelligence.

What do to with that?

Certainly, I don’t go public with it. If I am to remain a confidant, confidentiality is critical. Also, when I hear reports indicating a lack of conscious leadership in a company, I aim to help – not alienate – them.

I do keep a list, and I do index news and comments about unconscious companies and leaders.

So, what happens when a client, or a close contact, asks for help landing in companies I have “dark intelligence” about?

Well, it’s tricky, but I have adopted a policy and a protocol for making conscious decisions, meaning decisions in the highest good.

Some of my clients are coming to me to escape an unconscious company or boss because they feel stifled in their ability to lead consciously while succeeding in such an environment, and they want to make sure that their next opportunity is better aligned with their values and style. Since confidentiality goes both ways with my clients, I will tell them what I know and trust that they will use it only for the highest good.

Others want guidance in how to navigate their current environment and maximize their impact to leave it better than when they came. In this case, I provide them with questions to ask in interviews and in networking to qualify that the challenges that exist there are challenges they are going to confidently overcome to make the desired impact. The questions also ensure the existing challenges won’t be an obstacle to their impact or a career-killer, putting them into ethical predicaments that will force them to choose between becoming a whistleblower against their will or becoming complicit. I advise my clients only to go to this company if they are willing to be a whistleblower, which can have devastating effects when an industry is wrought with unconscious practices and leaders, and few conscious choices exist. However, should the need to become a whistleblower arise, they know I will be there to help them reinvent and redeem themselves so that they can move on to make their desired impact elsewhere.

Sometimes, it’s in the highest good that one of these companies hires my client, and sometimes it’s in the highest good that clients land where they can bring their whole selves to work and be uninhibited by unconscious conditions. If they are uncertain, as a coach I ask questions to help them come to their own conclusions and be at peace with their decision.

Over the years, especially earlier in my company, I found great joy and satisfaction in helping individual contributors breakthrough their corporate growth barriers and step into leadership. Unfortunately, the joy was diminished by reports of new insights they learned as they took on greater responsibility and had greater access to information, and had more involvement in strategic planning.

This was the point in my career that I started leaning further into conscious leadership coaching.

When dark intelligence about an unconscious company’s employment practices makes the news, certain comments, like, “The door is always right there. They can just work somewhere else,” seem super naïve, even ignorant. Inaugural Ambitions

On Wednesday, my daughters watched the female vice president of the United States get sworn in.

The ceremonious events, that thanks to COVID and virtual learning I got to watch with my daughters, represented new possibilities. They represented hope that the future will not look like the past… or the present, which isn’t working for a lot of us either.

This new leadership and new administration are inheriting seemingly insurmountable challenges. These are challenges we’ve faced before as a country, but never really all at once. Some of the previous solutions left painful gaps where wounds never could heal as they continued to be inflicted and fester.

Bridges need to be built, but first justice needs to be served!

President Biden has a very large chasm to close. And he has a very opposing path that his new Senate will be pursuing at the same time as he is attempting to close the chasm as well as to stop the bleeding.

How do you help heal a nation desperately divided while the bones are continuing to bleed? How do you prevent our country from being wounded in this way again? How do you hold the assailants accountable and still engage? Do you bring their apologists into the fold?

You can’t unify while you vilify.

Brené Brown’s research on shame is now mainstream in the corporate and professional development worlds. At its core, it teaches us that shame is about the worry that we aren’t worthy of connection.

So, how do you hold people accountable without vilifying them?

Let’s get biblical about this. Hate the sin; love the sinner.

One of the tenants of conscious leadership is assuming the best of intentions. Empathy seems like such a far reach from how many of us are feeling about people who have opposing views from us. The most passionate among us will not yield easily into empathy, even when they are ready. We have to give everyone time.

Unity will be a marathon, not a sprint. I expect there’s also no particular destination, and that it will be a continual journey. The more passionate we are, and the longer we persist in battle with the opposing side, we may start to exhaust and resign.

Anger is not the enemy of unity; apathy is. This is the real challenge ahead. The anger won’t subside until the wounding does.

As someone who advocates owning and processing emotions, I will not be urging you to put aside your anger. On the contrary – I say really lean into it. Listen to it. What is it that it’s telling you that you need? Go deep! What would that need provide to you once filled? What is all of this really about?

We are only one month into winter. We are all already craving spring for all that it provides, especially renewal and growth. Let’s take the next 8 weeks to sort out what is really at the core of our anger. Now is the time to dive deep into what we really want our world to be like on the other side of this, and what part we can play in that. I think most of us will find that it’s fear.

I am inspired by the possibility of the Reunited States of America. In fact, throughout COVID, I have been writing an album of songs about just that. I believe we can get there someday, but the only way out of the pain is through it.

May we empathize! May we heal! May we rise!

Is 2021 the Year You Join the Conscious Leadership Movement?

Where could we be right now if the world had an abundance of, rather than a lack of, conscious leaders?

Can you imagine where we Americans would be if most Americans trusted our leader? Where would we be if our leader gave us science-backed advice arrived at through a transparent protocol on how to come out of the pandemic faster and stronger than ever?

We can see how this played out in New Zealand, where the Kiwis have declared victory over COVID and have fully returned to life without mitigation efforts and restrictions.

Sweden’s King and Prime Minister admitted that keeping the country open was the wrong decision and his people are paying the price. While the wrong decision may have been made, admitting this mistake IS conscious leadership because it potentially helps others from suffering the same fate. It also puts the citizens on a better path in complying with life-saving measures instituted late, but better than never.

Here’s a more pressing question – Where will we be 3-5 years from now if we continue to lack conscious leaders? Could 2025 somehow be worse than 2020?

  • How many more scandals will arise, and what will they cost in lives, money, and progress?
  • Will citizens go to war with each other?
  • Will other countries take greater advantage of the instability?
  • Will we still be battling a pandemic?
  • What will happen to the business owners who had to close their doors due to COVID and all the employees that are displaced as a result?
  • Will more and more populations be victims of climate change?

Has 2020 made this gap in conscious leadership more obvious to you in a way that’s personal? Did you personally struggle to make conscious decisions as a leader?

Leading Through Change – Answer The Call To Conscious Leadership

We all couldn’t believe that last week’s Answer The Call to Conscious Leadership event was the last of the year. I think we can all also agree that 2020 has felt like the longest year ever.

I’m calling 2020 “The Year of Perfect Hindsight”, and I truly believe that through the C3 community, with these events and other co-creation between members, we are doing the important work of discussing the common issues that are impacting innovation, productivity, and progress the most. Additionally, we are exploring how to level up our leadership skills so that we can resolve the most urgent issues and collectively move toward a better 2021 and beyond.

In this last event of the year, Tiffany Frasier, President-Elect for ACMP (Atlanta Change Management Professionals), joined us as a panelist to offer her expert insights into how to lead through change. The topic of this training was voted on by our very own C3 community.

Never Forget, for Gen Z and Me

9/11 impacted me on a deeper level last year than it had in the past, thanks to my students.

You might think that 18 years later the impact of an event like 9/11 would fade. Actually, I realized in reflection that the trajectory of my life shifted significantly because of that day.

Last year, while planning the semester’s coursework and assignments, I saw that I had a class on 9/11. I didn’t think much about it. Even the weekend before when I saw that 9/11/19 was going to fall on a Wednesday, I made what seemed like an insignificant mental note and refocused on my to-do list.

Most days, my to-do list feels like a bunch of obligations I feel compelled to take care of, and the sense of responsibility outweighs the pride and joy I might otherwise take in my to-dos.

Class starts with 10-15 minutes of a mindfulness and/or self-awareness journaling exercise. When I lined up each exercise with each class during the summer, I was mostly thinking of progression and pairing with class topics.

On my way to class that morning, the DJs on the radio were recalling where they were when they heard the news. The female DJ shared that her mom woke her up with a call that morning and told her to turn on the news. She was annoyed, but once she realized the severity of the situation, she felt awful for being annoyed by her mom calling.

She was in college at the time and went to class because she didn’t know what else to do. She tried carrying on as though things were normal, but they were not. The professor told her to go home and call her mom. Then another student showed up and the professor told that student to do the same thing. “No one knows what to do right now.”

I had thought that I would let the day slide by without mentioning it, until I was on my way to class listening to the DJs recall their thoughts and emotions, forcing me to recall mine.

No one knew what this meant, if we would ever feel safe again, or if we were just watching the beginning of the end of life as we knew it. We knew that civilians and first responders were dying in scary and awful ways.

Many of us thought about people we knew living or working in New York City, or those we knew were supposed to fly somewhere that day. My brother was flying to the west coast that day. I was frantic until I heard from him that his flight was grounded in Pittsburgh.

I was a young professional, finally having found my path in recruiting, eager to get to the next level, and interface with clients and candidates. But it was taking too long. I was starting to get bored. I was yearning for change, but I wasn’t doing much to actually change things, like looking for a different job.

I loved my boss and the other women in my office. I was sure I would eventually learn new skills from them if I stuck it out, but I was more excited by my lunch break run than by the work I was doing.

Then one seemingly average, beautiful day, a call came in for the managing director. I remember overhearing her voice as she was on the call. She sounded shocked. My first thought was that something terrible must have happened in her family, but then she shared the news with the rest of the office. Shaking with tears in her eyes, she told us that a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center, and they think it was on purpose.

I can barely remember what happened next. I know that we dropped everything to search for news online. I might have found a live stream. The managing director went out to buy a TV to bring it into the office.

I had been working on a call list of management consultants in the DC area at that moment. There was no chance I would be reaching anyone now.

I remember calling my brother. I called my mom, dad, and boyfriend.

Another plane hit. We knew for certain now that it was a terroristic attack. Fear and shock left us bewildered.

What do we do? What can we do?

By 11 AM, we were told that we could go home if we needed to. I didn’t want to be alone. I didn’t want to take my run in a national park. Who knew if they had other targets. Eventually, I went home and tried to process what was going on.

Returning to work felt strange. I had called candidates who were working on the exact floors where one plane hit. How could work ever seem important again for me or them?

There was a universal sentiment – what we had previously thought was important, may not actually be that important. Everyone thought twice about what they were doing with their time. Everyone assessed what was really most important in their lives.

Armed Forces enrollment spiked, as did the number of people quitting their jobs, even in the midst of impending economical impacts.

By the time I got to campus that day last year, I was in tears struggling to compose myself. I thought for sure that I should make mention to my students of such a significant day in our country’s history, but also wondered how I could keep from ugly crying, which I felt like doing at the time.

As class began, I assessed my composure and decided I would introduce that day’s journal exercise by talking about 9/11. It wasn’t until I spoke that the synchronicity of the events, to me being there with them at that moment and what I was dedicating my career to, that the journal entry clicked. And the tears came, but I didn’t fight them.

This particular day, I challenged the students to think about Brules that they were following – BS rules made up by someone else about how to be successful and happy that are not authentic or in alignment with what would really make them successful and happy.

I told them how a good percentage of my clients come to me after or in the middle of successful careers because something is missing – some joy, some impact, some contribution that hasn’t been made after building their career, as meaningful as they thought it was at one time. I urged them to make sure they were defining their own happiness and success. What they were learning would help them make sure that at any point in the future, they could reinvent themselves and their definition of success.

These students were just kids when 9/11 happened. Some of them may have no memory of it because they were too young, and the older ones probably weren’t old enough to be told the truth of what had happened. Surely, at some point, as they got older, they learned about these events from a 3rd party observational perspective.

Today, though, I wanted them to tune into that universal sentiment – If it all, life as we know it, our financial model, our sense of safety and responsibility, changed today, what would really be important for you to do with your time? What beliefs that you adopted from others could you let go of now, and replace with what serves you and your own definitions of success and happiness?

My mission of making work a worthwhile way to spend time away from what’s really important was solidified by 9/11, both the day and the aftermath – the recession, my layoff, my struggle to land meaningful work again, and my realization that I no longer wanted to reject candidates – I wanted to help them.

I was only 27 when I started Epic Careering. Credibility was something I had to fight to establish, but I knew that I didn’t want to waste another year making a handful of placements while thousands of candidates stayed stuck and disempowered.

I knew that, like my parents, there were working parents everywhere coming home exhausted, overworked, and stressed out – wanting to have the energy to engage at home, but needing to disengage just to recover.

Even the best work is going to present challenges. Innovation and progress can’t happen without those challenges. However, if people are going to spend their time away from their families and loved ones, at least that time can be meaningful, fulfilling, and well-compensated.

If 9/11 hadn’t happened, I would probably not have been laid off, and I may not have had the personal experience of long-term unemployment that made me understand and help people going through the emotions of that experience. In fact, I may have continued to go through the motions of a job I was growing bored of, waiting for a chance to learn and do something more.

And if it hadn’t happened:

  • Would I still feel called to this mission?
  • Would I have gained such insights about what great talent craves if I had not gotten to know them as clients, only candidates?
  • Would I be consulting to companies on how to be better employers for sustainable, conscious growth?
  • Would I be teaching emerging students how to navigate the job market and become conscious leaders?
  • Would I volunteer my time to nurturing young entrepreneurs in an effort to spark future economic growth and innovation?

Likely not.

My to-do lists are mostly things that I GET to do in support of my mission. I am seeing that now more clearly, and I am grateful that my time, energy, and efforts are making a meaningful difference to others.

Coincidentally, my students were awesome at sharing their realizations. They went deep. They brought their emotions to the surface and learned that this was okay.

I saw that for them, 9/11, a day when too many tragically died, had birthed a new vision of how they can apply what they are learning in college to craft careers that help make the world a better place.

What Is Conscious Leadership and Why Do We Need It NOW to Save Tomorrow?

Yesterday, Vishen Lakhiani spoke at an online “I Am The Change” event hosted by Lisa Nichols, my former coach. Vishen is responsible for birthing Epic Careering’s newest offer, the Corporate Consciousness Ripple Blueprint.

When I saw him speak in San Diego in August of 2017, he opened up the event by challenging everyone in the room to only have or work for a humanity+ business. He showed a video of Tom Chi, Google X Co-Founder, answering a futuristic question, the answer to which I don’t think most of humanity was ready to hear: if consciousness doesn’t outpace innovation, we will destroy ourselves.

We need good people at the top, making decisions and leading future leaders toward a better world – right now! I wrote about this even before COVID, even before George Floyd, even before Beirut.

More than ever, we need people RIGHT NOW to wake up, speak up, stand up, step up, and lead us all to rise up, as Lisa Nichols laid out in her 5-day virtual event.

Vishen quoted MLK yesterday, in perfect context for what is happening right now in our world:

Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

The old models of leadership have failed, and are making way for new breeds of leadership. It might feel confusing, overwhelming, or trite, but don’t let it make you apathetic.

“Apathy is the enemy of democracy.” In other words, by being indifferent, you could end up giving all your power to whoever sees fit to use it.

Here’s a little cheat sheet of three of the leadership styles emerging to disrupt the oligarchy:

  • Situational Leader – Adapts leadership style to individuals
  • Servant Leader – Hires the best talent, gets out of their way, and makes sure that they have what they need to do what they do best
  • Conscious Leader – Answers the question, “What is for the highest good for all?” with acute self-awareness

All of these leadership styles require emotional intelligence, compassion, and ego-checking. They can also all be applied simultaneously; it’s not a “this or that” thing.

However, when applying situational leadership, watch out for people feeling as if you might be favoring one person over another with extra time.

With servant leadership, you have to balance taking full accountability for the performance of your team and setting strong accountability expectations so that you prepare your team members to become leaders who can step into your place.

With conscious leadership, you have to deal with your baggage. It’s hard work. You have to be committed to continually increasing your awareness of how your beliefs, insecurities, fears, and biases influence your impact and performance, how you are perceived, the decisions that you make, and the state of mind that you’re in.

“What is for the highest good?” seems like such a simple question, but when leaders are not all of the above, they may justify unconscious decisions. They may choose glory over good, or self-preservation over the preservation of company values.

In order to be conscious, leaders of today need better tools for leveraging data while integrating intuition into decision-making, managing conflict with compassion, and inspiring over convincing. They need to develop personally just as much, if not more, as they develop professionally.

If you want to be able to tell your kids and grandkids you did all you could to preserve a better world for them…

The time is now.
